EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
8503
Overview
This new lens does what many pros thought couldn't be done - replace the previous L-series 28-70 f/2.8 lens with something even better. Extended coverage to an ultra-wide-angle 24mm makes it ideal for digital as well as film shooters, and the optics are even better than before with two Aspherical elements and a totally new UD glass element. It's now sealed and gasketed against dust and moisture, and a new processing unit makes the AF faster than ever.

Excellent Lens but Not Perfect
Date: February 28, 2011
Pros: Superior build quality, sharpness, image quality, bokeh
Cons: inaccurate focus on 24mm
I'm very pleased with the copy that I got. It's sharp from f2.8 and sharper stopped down. But I'm now used to using L & primes, so I wasn't much impressed like when I got my first L lens. In fact, I thought this was rather kind of soft in the beginning. But as I tested, I realized this lens is pretty sharp especially as a zoom lens. What most amazed me about this lens is Image quality. It produces great color and bokeh. I love shooting with f2.8. Superb built quality. I think it's most effective when you use it with full-frame sensors even though still great with 1.6x cropped sensors. Heavy but not like 70-200mm f2.8. I actually like it. Somehow it helps me to keep my hand steady. The only thing it bothers me is that focus inaccuracy on 24mm. I have to zoom in to 70mm to make sure it focuses correctly. It's very annoying. But it's still much (I mean MUCH) better than a non-Canon lens (almost same spec as this) that I used before which had absolute focus inconsistency whatsoever. Over all I'm very happy with it.

Great zoom lens with some limitations
Date: February 8, 2011
Pros: Superior build quality, low flare, good color, nice contrast
Cons: Semi-sharp images, more than average ca
A lot of people dog this lens for not being sharp. In fact this lens has a fair amount of CA and if you correct for that it will look a good deal sharper. If your shots look misfocused at 24mm try CA correction.
Contrast and sharpness not all that great at 2.8 especially near edges. Considerable vignetting also. It cleans up pretty quickly though. I've not found a zoom that performs well at the largest apertures at short focal lengths; if you need this get a 35mm f/1.4 they are unbeatable.
AF was good for this kind of lens but nothing special.
It's kind of a heavy and fat lens, but it has the advantage that it takes the place of a couple of lenses if you don't need crisp and really fast.
For what kind of lens it is, it is a well done design.

Just Something About the Sharpness
Date: January 31, 2011
Pros: Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images, weight
I've had this lens for 2 years now. Overall, it's OK and I've had some good shots, but there is just something about the sharpness of the image that doesn't sit well with me. Whether it's the actual lens, or the autofocus, i don't know, but compared to the 70-200L F4 and the unbelievable 85L f1.2, my photos just don't seem to be at the 'sharpness" level I expect from an "L" lens. It's hard to put my finger on, but many others in these reviews seem to indicate a similar issue by listing "semi-sharp" as a con. Therefore, for the price, I have to vote "no" to recommend.

I wish this lens worked better!
Date: January 29, 2011
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality
Cons: Semi-sharp images, needs more iso than a 2.8 should
The 24-70 2.8 was one of my first, if not the first, lens purchases for my 40D. The pictures came out somewhat sharp, not tack sharp, and the camera needed to crank the ISO's up to get the shutter speed I needed. ( no IS!!! )
BTW, I am now using a 7D.
BTW, I am now using a 7D.
Subsequent purchases were the 70-200 2.8 IS and the 16-35 2.8. Both of these lenses need much less light than the 24-70, and both turn in superior quality pictures. Either I have a lense that for some reason is not calibrated, or the lens itself is a turkey. I hate it, and will not use it. The concept is good, 24-70 2.8 should be my carry lens, but my outcome every time is just mediocre. I have been advised to buy the new F4L zoom, I think it is IS and 24 to 104? Not sure.
